Chris Christie tried it. But is lap band weight loss surgery right for you?

New Jersey Governor Chris Christie recently revealed that he had underwent lap-band weight loss surgery to lose weight and improve health. Is weight loss surgery right for you? Morris County NJ personal trainer weights the pros and cons.
New Jersey Governor Chris Christie revealed he secretly underwent a weight-loss surgery in February known as the lap band and has dropped roughly 40 pounds since.  Christie agreed to the operation at the urging of family and friends after turning 50 last September.
“I want to applaud him for taking this big step to do something about his weight, not for political reason, for himself and his family,” says Carey Yang, a certified persona trainer and fitness expert in Morris County New Jersey.
Yang is the owner and master personal trainer at Beyond Fitness Solutions, LLC — a leading in-home personal training and weight-loss management company serving and helping clients in Morris County, Sussex County, Passaic County, Essex County and Somerset County areas in New Jersey.
“Now not every one can just walk up to the doctor for the surgery. There are certain criteria you have to meet. Although it indeed helps drop some initial weight quick in the beginning, it’s not a cure-all. I know some people gain a good part of lost weight back as they don’t commit to adopting a healthy lifestyle change, and engaging regular exercise and a healthy diet,” Yang  says. “There are also benefits, risks and side effects that one has to consider.”
The following criteria may make you a candidate for weight loss surgery:
1. A body mass index (BMI) greater than 40.
2. Your BMI is greater than 35, and you have obesity-related health problems that may improve with weight loss.
3. You can demonstrate that traditional weight loss programs like diet and exercise haven’t worked.
4. You are ready to commit to permanent lifestyle changes after surgery.
5. You understand the risks and benefits of weight loss surgery.
The primary benefit of weight loss surgery is weight loss. Gastric bypass surgery causes an average loss of 61% of excess weight. Gastric banding surgery causes slightly less at an average of 47% of excess weight lost. Improvements in general health are also common. Obesity-related medical conditions usually improve or even go away after weight loss surgery, including diabetes, severe arthritis, obstructive sleep apnea, and high blood pressure.
Weight loss surgery carries real risks. As many as 10% of people have complications afterward. Usually problems are only unpleasant or inconvenient, and might cause some pain and discomfort, or require additional surgeries, including nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, wound infections, and abdominal hernias.
Serious complications do occur after weight loss surgery and can sometimes be life-threatening such as blood clot to the lungs (pulmonary embolism), leaks in the new surgical, gut connections, bleeding ulcers, and heart attacks.
Weight loss surgery should be the beginning of a new and healthy lifestyle. To make the most of the surgery and to maximize results, people need to:
1. Eat healthy
Nearly all severely obese people have unhealthy eating habits. A common problem is “binge eating.” After weight loss surgery, eating large amounts of food at one sitting can make you sick. For many people, learning to eat small, frequent meals is a challenge.
2. Exercise
Keeping weight off is far easier when a person is active and exercises. In addition, exercise reduces rates of many diseases, including cancer and heart disease. To maintain weight loss in the long term, exercise is essential.
Such profound changes in lifestyle don’t happen automatically or easily for most. It’s simply but not easy. Pounds don’t just pile on in one day. For people who need guidance, coaching or training, it’s best to see a weight loss coach or experienced personal trainer. http://www.BeyondFitnessSolutions.com.

How Boring Math Can Help You Lose Weight and Stop Epidemic Obesity

Do you know what a mathematician finds out to solve the obesity problem?
Dr. Carson Chow is an MIT-trained mathematician and physicist. He was a faculty of the math department at the University of Pittisburgh. Recently he works for National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Disease – a branch of the National Institutes of Health. He’s in charge of a project trying to figure out why 2 in 3 Americans are overweight, 1 in 3 are obese.
Consider the facts:
- Between 1975 and 2005, the average weight of Americans had increased by about 20 pounds.
- Since the 1970s, the national obesity rate had jumped from around 20 percent to over 30 percent.
- The levels of physical activity have not really changes in the past 30 years.
After crunching large volume of numbers, he finally developed a mathematical model to answer a host of questions about weight loss. The mathematical equation says:
- The conventional widsom of 3500 calories less is what it takes to lose a pound of weight is wrong! It’s not a constant as your body changes when you lose weight.
- The fatter you get, the easier it is to gain weight.
- If you eat 100 calories fewer a day, you will lose 10 pounds on the average in 3 years – if you don’t cheat.
- Large variations in daily food intake will not cause variation in weight as long as the average food intake over a year is about the same, because your body responds slowly to food intake.
- All diets work. But the reaction time is really slow, on the order of a year. Most people aren’t patient and wait long enough to see what they’re doing to stabilize their weight.
His conclusion?
Overproduction of food in the United States.
Since the 1970s, the government changed agricultural policy to promote farming to full production. The price of foods went down and the number of calories available to the average American increased by about 1000 a day!
Well, what do think people do with that extra 1000 calories? They eat it, of course. If you know that Americans are already wasting a lot of foods, obesity would be even worse if they eat them all.
Take-away Message
Watch what you eat and how much you eat and when.

War Against Epidemic Obesity Declared by Morris County NJ Personal Trainer

Fighting against rising epidemic obesity is a national warfare declared by Morris County NJ personal trainer, fitness expert and diet coach Care Yang.

Obese Pot Belly

National obesity rate keeps rising with no stop in sight. According to new report from the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, about 32 million more Americans will become obese by 2030, upping obesity rates to 42 percent of the U.S. population

The report also predicts that the proportion of Americans who are severely obese, meaning more than 100 pounds overweight, will reach 11 percent, about double the current rate. The damage is $550 billion of obesity-related health care costs that can be used to build national infrastructure, improve education, enhance job skills training, reduce unemployment rate, and stimulate economy.

"This is a sad story to read," says Carey Yang,  a certified personal trainer and fitness expert in New Jersey.

Yang is the owner and master personal trainer at Beyond Fitness Solutions, LLC — a leading in-home personal training and weight-loss management company serving and helping clients in Morris County, Sussex County, Passaic County, Essex County and Somerset County areas in New Jersey.

About 34 percent of adults are currently obese, creating a whole host of expensive, chronic health problems, such as cardiovascular disease and diabetes.

"This is a war and we have to fight together as a nation," Yang says. "It has to start with youth. We know that about 50 percent of severe obesity in adults is consequence of obesity in childhood. Currently about 17 percent of children and adolescents are obese."

Yang says, we have so many government agencies, non-profit organizations, communities and schools involved to fight both adult and childhood obesity with a variety of programs. Even the First Lady Michelle Obama early this year launched a campaign to fight childhood obesity by improving childhood nutrition and physical activity.

“Nutrition and exercise start from home. Parents hold the key to educating their children,” Yang says. “Parents should be good role models for their children. If your children see you slouch in front of the tube and dig into a bag of chips along with a bottle of beer, it’s hard to resist the same lifestyle. Chunky Mom, plus chunky Dad, often equals chunky kids and pets.”

Yang advocates parents and family involvements in fighting against obesity. Health and fitness is truly a family matter. He offers a few solutions to promoting active lifestyle and making healthy choices.

1. Be a positive role model. Parents have to set a good example for themselves and for their children such as regular exercise, being active and eating a healthy balanced die.

2. Set family time to prepare meals and exercise together. Research shows that families eating and exercising together also stay closer.

3. Assign household chores. Children can learn the value of responsibility by sharing active household chores while increasing physical activity.

4. Limit sedentary activities. Watching TV and playing electronic games have taken so much time and opportunity out of moving around and exercising. Studies have shown that reducing TV time is associated with reductions in body weight and body fat.

It’s a day-to-day process and a series of repeated small steps that add up to awesome health habits. “Every time you choose the vegetables over the chips, a walk over a drive, and an active game over T.V., you’ve just made another donation to yourself and to your families lifetime health and fitness fund,” Yang says.

Americans Are Fat and Getting Much Fatter. NJ Celebrity Trainer and Fitness Expert Offers Help.

Americans are fat and getting much fatter. New study shows that 83% of men and 72% of women will be overweight or obese by year 2020. New Jersey celebrity fitness trainer Carey Yang offers his tips in fighting epidemic obesity.

America’s unstoppable obesity rates would account for more than $860 billion healthcare cost by 2030. “This is an alarmingly tough uptrend to fight againist,” says Carey Yang, a certified personal trainer and fitness expert  in Morris County, New Jersey.

Yang is the owner and master personal trainer at Beyond Fitness Solutions, LLC -- a leading in-home personal training and weight-loss management company serving and helping clients in Morris County, Sussex County, Passaic County, Essex County and Somerset County areas in New Jersey.

According to a latest study by Mark Huffman, an assistant professor of preventive medicine and cardiology at Northwestern University who presented them at the annual scientific meeting of the American Heart Association, Americans are continuing to get fatter and fatter. In the current trend, 83% of men and 72% of women will be overweight or obese by 2020.

Right now, 32 percent of men and 34 percent of women are obese. Those numbers are projected to rise to 43 and 42 percent in 2020, close to half of all people.

The number of people who have diabetes or are pre-diabetic is also projected to increase, from 6.3 percent and 37 percent of women to 8.3 percent and 44 percent. That's more than half of women.

Yang says, we have so many government agencies, non-profit organizations, communities and schools involved to fight both adult and childhood obesity with a variety of programs. Even the First Lady Michelle Obama early this year launched a campaign to fight childhood obesity by improving childhood nutrition and physical activity.

Yang offers four strategies to help overweight and obese men and women burn fat 24/7 by optimizing fat burning hormones and elevating metabolism around the clock.

1. Optimized Nutrient Combining: Avoid deadly nutrient combination of carb and fat. Release of insulin and fat promote storage. Do this by simply protein in every meal.

2. Carb Syncing: Prime your body with carb at the right times, in the morning and after intense exercise.

3. Strategic Overfeeding: Restricting calories and dieting put your body to starvation mode and decrease your metabolism to burn less fat. Strategic overfeeding resets your metabolism and keep your fat-burning furnace running again.

4. Metabolic Resistance Training: This type of exercise provides a huge metabolic stimulus to the entire muscular and cardiovascular systems at the same time through strategically designed full body resistance training combined with minimal rest.  This is what allows for an unparalleled exercise-induced increase in metabolism for hours and hours after your session—something we call the "after burn."

"When you combine the metabolism power of Metabolic Resistance Training with the hormone-regulating power of Optimized Nutrient Timing, Carb Syncing, and Strategic Overfeeding, the only thing your body can do is respond by burning fat 24/7," Yang says.

The 4 Forgotten Habits of Highly Fit and Healthy People

If you missed the last article on The Top 3 Habits of Highly Fit and Healthy People, you can read it here or click on the following link.

http://www.beyondfitnesssolutions.com/beyondfitness/2011/09/weight-loss/top-3-habits-of-highly-fit-and-healthy-people/

Here are four more habits of highly fit and healthy people. They're equally important elements to keep a fit and healthy lifestyle.

Healthy Habit #4: They Have Goals

Highly fit, in-shape people always have a goal. After all, you can’t improve something unless you know what you are trying to improve it to. Those goals can be small and incremental, or large and ambitious. In either case, they act with a sense of purpose when it comes to their health and physical fitness.

Whether that goal is to maintain their current physique, improve it, reduce body fat, gain additional muscle, increase their endurance or stamina, become more flexible, improve their coordination, or develop a better golf swing, they will always have a goal that they are shooting for.

They have more stable blood sugar, more consistent energy levels, and are less prone to gaining body fat because they rarely eat more calories in any given meal than their body can utilize.

Healthy Habit #5: They Drink Water

Highly fit people understand the benefits of water. When you see them, whether it's at the gym, at home or in the office, a bottle of water will often be close at hand. Proper hydration isn’t just important to athletes and runners, but everyone. Water can blunt fatigue, improve concentration and thought clarity, discourage the formation of kidney stones, improve digestion and improve performance in the gym.

Healthy Habit #6: They Don’t Diet!

Highly fit and healthy people understand that long term health and fitness requires consistently eating smart. And smart eating for a highly fit person is just part of their everyday routine.

They don’t skip breakfast. The often bring their own lunch to work and they seem to always be snacking on healthy foods like apples, vegetables and nuts.

The one exception to this rule is competitive male and female bodybuilding. Competitive bodybuilders will often diet leading up to a competition in order to drive their body fat down to very low levels. It’s very difficult for any person, no matter how well-conditioned they are, to maintain these extremely low, competition-grade body fat levels for any significant amount of time.

Healthy Habit # 7: They Record Their Progress

Healthy, highly-fit people keep track of their exercise so they can determine whether they are actually making progress toward their goals. You can’t improve what you don’t measure.

It may simply be a notebook where they write down each exercise, the weight and completed reps. Or it may be more formal, for example a store-bought exercise and fitness log or a sheet provided by their gym.

It takes conscious and consistent effort to break old habits and form new healthy habits. Start small. Pick 1 to 2 habits a week to work on. Pay attention to your focus and environment. Make sure they're helping, not sabotaging.

Dear Mr. Governor Christie,

I know it’s not feeling good to be criticized in public about your weight. It’s even worse to be publicized and ridiculed in the political arena and media all over the places.

Truth to be told, you know you have to lose weight, improve your health , and get in better shape for yourself, for your family and kids, for New Jersey residents and voters, and possibly for all U.S. people if you decide to run for U.S. President some day.

I don’t need to repeat the scientific study, research data or statistics to convince you. You know you have to do it.

We know you’ve been trying fo years. Your struggling with weight control. exercise and diet is not uncommon. Many many Americans share similar challenges in combating overweight, obesity and a host of related health issues. As a result, our nation’s healthcare cost has risen rapidly.

Great leaders set a good and strong example for demonstrating their integrity and characters. They walk the talk, not just talk to talk. It would be an inspiration to all Americans if you step up the plate, keep your promise, show your discpline and results.

People have compared you and your weight with President Obama. He has finally kicked his smoking habit.

Crush Your Fat Genes with Morris County Personal Trainer Carey Yang

Morris County Personal Trainer Carey Yang will lead a new group fitness training class titled “Crush Your Fat Genes: Train Like a Fitness Model Without Being One” starting Tuesday, March 8, 2011 at 7:30 pm. This fat-burning and muscle-toning boot camp will take place at Morris Knolls High School in Rockaway, New Jersey.

DENVILLE, NJ -- February 20, 2011 – Two-thirds of Americans are either overweight or obese. Obesity has become epidemic and the number one disease to fight against to minimize the risk of cancer, cardiovascular conditions, and high blood pressure.

“Overweight and obesity has negatively impacted our healthcare system and drained our resources,” says Carey Yang, a personal trainer and owner of Beyond Fitness Solutions, LLC based in Denville, New Jersey.

“As a personal trainer, my job is help my clients get on a healthy lifestyle by motivating them, doing regular workout through strength training and cardio exercises, and eating a nutrient-rich diet,” said Yang. “The problem is that far too many people are too busy to do any of those due to modern lifestyle. It’s my mission to change and reverse the down trend.”

Many fat people blame their fat genes by looking at their parents and family. Some research findings seem to prove that. But it is not conclusive. Obesity is the result of many influences. Genetics is only one of them.

“Most of the factors that affect body composition are entirely under your control. These factors include how much you eat, what you eat, when you eat, what type of exercise you do, how frequently you exercise, how long you exercise and how hard you exercise,” Yang said.

Yang is leading a group fitness training class called “Crush Your Fat Genes: Train Like a Fitness Model Without Being One.”

This fitness training program lets the students experience the most effective, time-efficient workouts for fat loss and muscle toning. “Whatever it takes” is the motto.

“Yes, you can train and look like a fitness model without being one, at any age. The total-body CORE program combines kickboxing and self-defense while utilizing bodyweight and light weights,” Yang said. “You’ll walk out of the training with a sense of pride, self-confidence and feeling of strength, energy and stamina.”

The group fitness class will be held at Morris Knolls High School, 50 Knoll Drive in Rockaway, New Jersey on Tuesdays March 8, 15, 22 and 29 from 7:30 pm to 8:30 pm.

The class is $49 per person for all 4 sessions. Registration is required by calling Morris Hills Adult and Continuing Education at (973) 664-2295 or visiting online http://www.mhcontinuingedu.com/. Enter class code 6173.
